Construction in History: The Colosseum in Rome
Construction Historical Note:
In 70 AD, emperor Vespasian started the construction one of
the most famous and splendid building of the ancient times,the Colosseum.
With the sacked treasury of the temple of Jerusalem, Vespasian had the money to build his project. Builders used concrete, stone and marble as materials supplied by provinces in Italy. Around 12,000 slaves were involved in the construction.
It has been estimated that 3.5 million cubit feet of travertine blocks went into the construction. This project lasted 10 years. The Colosseum was finished by Vespasian's son Titus in 80 AD.
In our times, with difficulties in accessing money, labor and materials, projects need to hire professional estimators and schedulers to get the job done under budget and on schedule.
